Ionolux – The advantages of composite and glass ionomer in one product

In terms of performance, glass ionomer materials are often brought into comparison with highly developed composites. Ionolux, the light-curing, glass ionomer restorative by VOCO, combines the advantages of both material classes. Ionolux is a light-curing, glass ionomer restorative available in shades A1, A2 and A3. It was developed for multiple indications in conservative and pre-prosthetic dentistry.

One material for multiple indications

Ionolux is suitable for temporary and small Class I restorations as well as for Class III and V restorations, particularly for cervical restorations and the treatment of root caries. The tooth-shaded restorative can additionally be used for core build-ups and liners, where it represents an ideal alternative to the composite-bonded-to-flow technique (CBF technique) in deep cavities. Ionolux permits outstanding placement in the cavity, blocks out undercuts, levels unevenness and does not lead to changes in the natural shade of the surrounding tooth substance in the process. Moreover, Ionolux is well-suited for the sandwich technique, since it is compatible with all conventional light-curing restoratives. With its optimal material and handling properties, Ionolux is especially recommended for use in situations where the patients represent a special challenge for the dentist: paediatric and geriatric dentistry as well as pain and emergency therapy. Ionolux can also be utilised for pre-prosthetic treatments where extensive tooth substance defects must be remedied in order to subsequently prepare the superstructure and carry out the permanent restorations.

Optimal material and handling properties

Ionolux can be quickly applied after creating a relatively dry working field. The material can be packed and modeled immediately after placement without sticking to the instrument. It also adapts well to cavity walls. Conditioning the tooth substance before placing the filling or using a varnish after curing is hardly necessary with Ionolux. The polymerisation times are short and surgery-oriented with only 20 seconds per layer. Ionolux is distinguished by a moderate working time that the dentist can individually control with the use of a polymerisation light. Ionolux is easy to polish and bio-compatible due to its specific material composition. Ionolux additionally contributes to reducing the risk of secondary caries with its release of fluoride. Ionolux has a very high compressive strength (219.6 MPa) as well as very low water solubility (0.16%) and thus permits stable, durable restorations. In addition to the previously introduced, practical AC version, Ionolux is now also available in the especially economical hand-mix version, which reduces the amount of equipment needed. Use the combined advantages of GIC and composite with Ionolux: restore, polymerise, finish, done!
